Why do we feel the need to attribute human characteristics to God? I think the main reason is to create a God who is accessible to everyone. By giving him (or her, for simplicity I’ll use him in future) the human touch we feel we understand him better. I personally think that this is wrong, why does God have to be humanised? By giving him human strengths and failings we confuse the issue. We’ve all heard people talking about a “cruel and vindictive God”, and trying to understand why he’d allow atrocities – the simple answer to this is that he isn’t human, he doesn’t have a conscience. Once you manage to get past this it’s a lot easier to understand the world as it is today. So many actions are committed “in the name of God” because the people involved assume that God would care about whatever they are doing in his name. I don’t believe he does. I don’t believe God has any power to affect human affairs, although many believe he does, which is part of the reason why there’s so much bloodshed in the world. I think we as a whole have a problem with the fact that God might not care about what we do, for so many years we’ve been taught at some level that God is all, he watches over you and won’t let any harm come to you, and it’s a bit of a mind wrench to suddenly realise he’s just a vague force that really doesn’t have any interest in our lives. I suppose it’s like someone finding out their parents don’t care for them, which is why people get so upset when these beliefs are challenged.
Although I don’t have any firm ideas on what God is, I’m leaning towards the pure energy theory. I do believe there is something behind existence, but I don’t feel it’s an “intelligent” force in the sense that we understand intelligence to be. Yes, I’m still in the process of making my mind up on this, but I am certain that God isn’t what we’re expected to believe.
